The National Traffic System
In many locations, the NTS is a separate function of the ARRL’s activities. The NTS is a network of hams who pass messages for others. In most cases, this is interstate communications. It was especially important before the days of cheap phone rates and the internet. But the skills of the NTS operators are still VERY much needed in an emergency. They run the packet nets, bulletin boards and pass messages in and out of the section. They aid in running nets and keep things organized. Because of the importance of this role in a disaster, Connecticut has made the NTS system a regular part of the ARES work with their own DEC in charge.
