REGION 5 will be conducting a WORKSHOP

Objective:  To learn how to operate and program Amateur Radios that might be used during an emergency.

Scope:  It can be a challenge just to turn on the new high tech radios used today, but it can be especially difficult to operate an unknown radio during an emergency.  This can be a challenge to many of us, even very experienced operators!   Most of us have our own Go Bag with a radio and equipment that we know and are comfortable with, that we would take along when being deployed in an emergency.  But you might be deployed into a COM center at an EOC or to an affected area where there will be radios already on line, setup and running, and you will be relieving the operator.  They need your experience as the radio op or as the Net Control but you need to know how to operate that radio.  You might need to change frequency or turn up the power; which button do I push or knob do I turn?  This is when things can be difficult.  Our GOAL for this workshop will be to show how to use some different brands of radios.  You might be familiar with an ICOM but will need to use a Kenwood.  Using an unfamiliar radio can be frustrating.  We hope to show how to use some of the essential features on each radio; such as selecting a frequency with offsets and the possible PL’s as needed during an emergency. The time is now, during this workshop, without the pressure of an emergency, to learn how to use the radios displayed during this activity.

We are working on “quick guides” on how to program the radios on the fly and to have software loaded on PC’s to demonstrate how to program radios from a computer.

Work Shop will be held on April 12th in Region 5 all are invited to join us.  Two Fold: #1 we learn from each other #2 we come up with a standard that can be used by all.
