8 AM to 4 PM
The Red Cross held a Severe Weather Drill in West Haven.  Amateur radio operators responded for both the Red Cross as well as for the West Haven Office of Emergency Management.  Some 31 members of the West Haven CERT team (in their first public event) handled Shelter operations. The brand new SPARC (Shore Point Amateur Radio Club) Command Vehicle made its debut with flashing lights, a full array of communications gear (HF to 900 MHz) and antennas.  A screwdriver antenna mounted on the roof of the vehicle for HF work allowed communications during the drill to locations such as W4KVW and K4S in Florida, WA5LOC in Arkansas, OH2LU in Finland and RL3BM in Russia.  The vehicle served as the event's command post at the Carrigan School in West Haven where the drill took place.  The Red Cross ERV was set up in the same general area.  Also responding to the drill were several members of the West Haven Police Department with their Mobile Command Post.  The Allingtown Fire Department also responded with several pieces of equipment.  Ambulances were on hand to take care of the "victims" as they arrived from the storm damaged areas.  The Red Cross stationed a Triage Tent just outside the registration area to pre-process the victims.
A big round of applause goes to Chris (KB1OLS), the newly-nominated EC for West Haven, and others from the SPARC membership for all their hard work in making the SPARC Command Unit what it is and offering it for use wherever it may be needed by CT ARES or others during any emergency or local event.  The following ham radio operators responded to the drill: KB1OLS - SPARC member/ARES EC for West Haven
W1MHZ - SPARC
W1AIR - SPARC
N1XCB - SPARC
N1HAW - SPARC/ARC/ARES
KB1ERP - SPARC/ARC/ARES
KA1DCL - ARES EC for Milford
N1YAE - ARES EC for Ansonia, Derby, Seymour & Shelton
K1SOX - SPARC/ARES
N1HUI - ARC/ARES
KB1IIS - ARC/ARES
N1EDX - SPARC/ARES
WA1SFH - ARES and K2OT - SPARC - came to the drill but could not stay
A hearty thank you to all for a job well done and a special thank you to Brian for getting so many SPARC members involved.

The Shoreline Amateur Radio Club (SARC) of Westbrook was contacted by MS coordinators to supply hams for the April 22, 2007 Clinton MS Walk-A-Thon.  Although not being a SARC officer, Don Krahl (N1KSY) felt it necessary to step up to the plate, and recruit hams for the Walk-A-Thon.  The weather was sunny, warm, and great for walking.  Approximately 400 walkers signed up.  Don would like to personally thank the following hams for sacrificing their Sunday morning to provide communications for the walk.  Refreshments were served after the walk.
Sid Gale, N1MVM, Clinton Town Green, Rest Stop 1
John Sevanick, KB1KKV, Clinton Town Beach, Rest Stop 2
      Celeste Krahl, N1UTL, SAG Wagon
      Don Krahl, N1KSY, Net Control

Thanks Again,
Don Krahl, N1KSY
SARC ex-president

My thanks also to Don Izzo (N1HAX) for making me aware of this event.

The Town of Redding, with the assistance of the Danbury ARC, will hold an emergency shelter drill to train its CERT in shelter operations.  Several local ARES members will be present to assist with internal communications using two-way radios, as well as possibly communicate with the "outside world".  For the latter, it looks like we will have the EOCs in Bethel, Ridgefield and Danbury "on line" to communicate with.  To read a press release on the event see acorn-online.  ARES is mentioned towards the end.
During the drill, the First Selectman and Emergency Director, amongst others, will be present as will again the press.   We intend to put on a good show.  I have already ordered 100 copies of the new "If All Else Fails..." brochure to be handed out and we have an "If All Else Fails..." banner, which, with a bit of luck, we will be able to hang up.
Anyway, all in all it will be a nice opportunity to demonstrate to the Town of Redding a little of our capabilities, as well as to the public at large.

SAT., 05-12-07 Spring Fest
SUN., 05-20-07 "Touch A Truck"
Region 2 helped out with a fund raiser for the Trumbull High School Marching Band.  We showed off amateur radio to many interested attendees and did a bit of operating in spite of terrible band conditions.   The SPARC Mobile Command Unit managed two contacts to Florida and one to Arizona in addition to a few local UHF/VHF contacts.  Attending the event, aside from dozens of "big rigs" that attracted the many children, were the Derby EOC Bus, the Derby EOC Staging vehicle (a converted Ambulance), the SPARC vehicle, and my personal mobile unit.   My thanks goes to:
Vinny Vizzo and his two assistants from the Derby EOC and
Chris (N1FAA) and Craig (W1MHZ) with their SPARC vehicle
for supporting this event.

WEDS., 07-03-07 West Haven Fireworks Show
Several volunteers responded to the call from Chris Burns (N1FAA, West Haven EC) to help the West Haven PD with communications during the Fireworks Display.  The volunteers wandered through the crowd of some 10000-20000 spectators, keeping alert for reports of missing children, injuries, and any other anomalies so that emergency response to the scene would be quicker.  There was only one event and that was that of a young special needs child that had gotten separated from his parents but was soon reunited.
Under the leadership of N1FAA were the following volunteers:
     N1HAW, N1EDX, WA1SFH, KA1WBN, N1MVM, W1LAG, KA1JXW, KB1OGE, W1MHZ, W1AIR, KB1GWY, and K1WMQ.
The West Haven Chief of Police extended his gratitude and appreciation for our efforts and looks forward to working with the group in the future.  Job well done to all.
